The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), established in 2003, is a world-class research institute dedicated to understanding brain function and developing strategies to prevent and treat brain disorders. The BR-QBI Animal Facility is a leader in colony management within the UQ Biological Resources team, offering specialised support in managing genetically complex breeding schemes. This tailored service enables researhcers to focus more on experimental work. The facility houses up to 4,800 individually ventilated cages (IVCs in its SPF breeding wing, with an additional 3,200 IVCs available in the conventional experimental wing. Access to the QBI managed ultrasound and behaviour suites is available via BR-QBI.

Facility husbandry conditions
Current users can use the below facility information to report in enough detail facility information. Reporting animal research in adherence with the ARRIVE guidelines ensures transparent and thorough reporting. This enables readers and reviewers to scrutinise the research adequately, evaluate its methodical rigour, and reproduce the methods or findings. Research groups considering non-standard caging (opting out of a standard cage), should consider the following article to support understanding about indirect impacts to research design Reproducibility and Rigor in Animal-Based Research.

Pathogen exclusion list
The Pathogen Exclusion List identifies specific pathogens that the facility aims to exclude. Where possible, animals known to carry any of these pathogens are not accepted into the facility. This list is not exhaustive, and other pathogens may still be present. Our internal health monitoring program provides an indication of the current pathogen status within the colony, but only for agents that are actively tested for, and returned a negative result. Researchers should use this information to assess the potential impact of existing pathogens on their specific research models and plan accordingly.
